Research Assistant Professor of Agronomy

Job Description This is a 12-month full time Assistant Professor position with 80% research and 20% extension appointment at the University of the Virgin Islands Agricultural Experiment Station and Cooperative Extension Service on St. Croix. The faculty member manages the Agronomy research program by developing and conducting research projects in the areas of forage agronomy, forage ecology and multi-disciplinary agriculture production systems to benefit the US Virgin Islands. Specifically, these areas include mixed forage/livestock production systems, forage based integrated cover crop technology, soil ecology and fertility, tropical forage crop production and sustainable agriculture. The faculty is responsible for maintaining research facilities and equipment, supervision of a Research Specialist and Agricultural Aides as well as performing other related duties as assigned. The faculty is expected to write grants, secure funding, plan and initiate experiments, collect and analyze data, write peer-reviewed journal articles and present papers at regional, national and international conferences. The extension duties will consist of providing training for livestock producers and other stakeholders in pasture management, forage/livestock production systems and hay production. These activities will include, but are not limited to, seminars, workshops, short courses, site visits and extension publications as well as performing other related duties as assigned. Required Qualifications Ph.D. in Agronomy with emphasis in forage crops. Candidates that have finished their Ph.D. classes, research, and defense and are waiting for graduation will be considered and are encouraged to apply. A measurable research and extension background in forage agronomy, livestock-forage interactions and small-scale agriculture. Knowledge of forage crop production, soil science, plant nutrition, livestock forage interactions, ruminant livestock production, field plot techniques, forage harvesting and hay production. Preferred Qualifications Essential skills include field plot techniques, experimental design, data analysis, basic laboratory techniques, data collection, grant writing, budget management, professional leadership and mentoring of undergraduate students. There should be documented evidence of writing ability such as published articles in peer reviewed journals. Physical Demands Work outdoors in a hot, humid climate and be able to do physical tasks such as lifting 50 lbs.
