Research Associate I (Milan, TN) - 20000001FC The AgResearch and Education Center at Milan is seeking a Research Associate to oversee row crop research projects for multiple principal investigators in support of the research and outreach programs of the AgResearch and Education Center at Milan. Position provides professional, technical and analytical research support including design, planning, implementation, and analysis. Responsibilities: Participates in the design, planning, establishment, maintenance and harvest of field and controlled environment research projects. Prepares and executes research protocols. Collaborates in the development of project plans and execution of those plans including experimental layouts, planting, fertility, scouting, pest management and harvesting. Works closely with center director, faculty, research associates and graduate students in the assignment of research plot space and implementation of research projects. Records, compiles and analyzes research data on row crops and other related projects for several principal investigators. Secures supplies and maintains research equipment, irrigation systems and all facilities of the unit. Complies with all regulatory requirements in Responsible Conduct in Research (RCR) including accurate record keeping. Maintains GIS database including current maps of all fields. Maintains records of all field operations. Trains and supervises employees on safety, research methods, techniques, and equipment operation required to conduct all experiments and projects. Required Qualifications/Skills: · Knowledge of row crop farming, farm safety, modern agricultural practices. · Working knowledge of agronomic research methodology and protocols, plot layout and experimental design. · Knowledge of pest management. Ability to obtain Certified Pesticide Applicator - Category C10. · Knowledge of farm laboratory safety including proper application of crop protection products. · Skills in the operation and maintenance of row crop farm equipment. · Ability to work in extreme weather conditions and around dust and pollen; ability to work a flexible schedule. · Excellent verbal and written communication skills; basic computer skills. · Data analysis skills; knowledge of statistics. · Ability to multi-task; time management skills and excellent organization skills. · Ability to work independently or as part of a team. · Ability to work well with those of various backgrounds, education and experience. · Ability to receive and follow instruction, make wise independent decisions and be self-motivated. Preferred: · Demonstrated ability to plan, design and implement field/controlled environments research, and interpret research results using accepted scientific methodology. · Ability to train, supervise and direct the work of other personnel. · Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheets, presentation, database and statistical software desired. · Ability and skills to prioritize, allocate, procure, and coordinate resources. · Ability to train, supervise and direct the work of other personnel. Education/Experience: B.S. degree in Agronomy/Crop Science or closely related field of study with 2 growing seasons’ row crop farm or research education center experience.
