The USDA, Agricultural Research Service, Forage Seed and Cereal Research Unit in Corvallis, Oregon invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate, (Research Associate, Soil Scientist) for a two-year Appointment (GS-11, $68,992- $89,695 per annum) plus benefits. Duties: The incumbent will join a team of scientists (microbiologist, soil scientist, water quality specialist) to study the effects of tile drainage and other cropping practices on soil health, water quality, and yield in seed cropping systems in the Willamette Valley of Oregon. A suite of emerging and established methods will be used to describe changes to soil carbon, nutrient pools, microbial communities, and other soil health metrics. Statistical and computational models will be used to analyze data and to predict long term, landscape level, or economic consequences of management practices. The position requires knowledge in soil science, microbial ecology and skills in developing hypotheses based on current literature, designing, and conducting experiments, analyzing data, and preparing manuscripts for publication in peer reviewed journals.
Requirements: Candidates must have a recent Ph.D. in soil science, ecology, microbiology or a related field that has equipped the applicant with the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position, such as:
Knowledge of soil biogeochemistry, microbial ecology, and soil health assessment.
Skill in multivariate statistical analysis
Experience working with soils
Ability to publish results in peer-reviewed literature.
Candidate must be able to work in adverse weather conditions; occasional travel may be required.
