DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW The Research and Development Department is responsible for the development of technology platforms and products designed to support the future growth, competitiveness, and long-term sustainability of the company. As part of its platform development efforts, R&D conducts a wide range of research activities, namely in the areas of trait discovery and validation, crop genetic engineering, crop transformation, molecular detection, biochemical assays, plant growth, and molecular breeding, to name a few. These activities are aimed at developing new capabilities in crop research, the outcome of which is then leveraged to create new product development opportunities and shorten the time to market. The department leverages its platform capabilities and extensive knowhow in biology and crop science, along with the computational expertise housed within the Data Science & Platform Engineering, as well as the market insights of the Business Development and Commercial teams to design and create new and improved crop varieties, which offer tangible benefits to farmers and consumers, specifically in the areas of sustainability, health and nutrition.
We are actively seeking a self-starting R&D Operations Manager to join our rapidly growing Research and Development Department. With a sense of urgency, this person will set the vision for the station by leading operations, providing guidance and support for the team through coordination and execution of soybean breeding and testing projects. This position will operate independently and collaborate with other soybean stations and research groups to plan and execute experiments throughout the identified region of interest. Will trouble-shoot protocols and solve complex problems by viewing problems as an opportunity to make a difference. Exercises technical discretion in the design, execution and interpretation of experiments that contribute to larger projects. Inter-departmental cooperation expected. Empower personnel to own the projects assigned, communicate KPI’s and goals. Negotiate with select contract service providers. Strive for efficient and effective.
YOU’LL MAKE AN IMPACT BY: (ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES)
Formulate and lead station personnel in the establishment and execution of work plans and job duties
Responsible for all seed processing, yield trial & nursery establishment / maintenance
Develop and implement novel approaches to old problems and think innovatively
Works closely with the soybean breeding team to align operations with program objectives
Organize and perform data analysis
Prepare and communicate operational and technical reports
Manages station operations, personnel, and budget
Maintains a broad range of existing technical skills and can quickly learn new skills
Adopting new technologies and lead change
Identifies inefficiencies in processes and works collaboratively to make improvements
Goal Development for station personnel that align with company objectives as well as personal development
EDUCATION: Prefer Master’s in relevant field with 2+ years of related experience, minimum requirement is BS degree in relevant field plus 5 years of related experience
QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS: Strong leadership capability with conflict resolution experience, preference for 2+ years’ experience leading people, deep knowledge of breeding operations and seed purification process, experience managing field research data, data analysis, working knowledge of small plot equipment and operations, mechanical diagnostic skills a plus, UAVs, GPS technology, attention to detail, pesticide applicators license or ability to obtain, CDL license or ability to obtain and familiarity with budget management.
Ability to travel up to 20% of the time, consisting of visits to outlying research locations, seasonal meetings, and to winter nursery operations
Strong skills with Microsoft Office, PRISM and ability to learn and utilize proprietary software tools
